'RATTLES' – DIAGNOSTIC AND VACCINE
'Rattles' is one of the most commonly diagnosed respiratory tract infections of the lower airways of thoroughbred foals and can be fatal if untreated. The cause of 'Rattles' is Rhodococcus equi, similar to the organisms responsible for tuberculosis in humans (Mycobacterium tuberculosis). 'Rattles' is a major cause of wastage in thoroughbred foals worldwide and has been ranked among the four most important disease problems of the horse industry. Vet Biotechnology has already developed a prototype diagnostic for "Rattles". The ultimate goal of research is the development of a vaccine for the long term management of the disease.
EQUINE GASTRIC ULCER SYNDROME (EGUS) – BREATH TEST DIAGNOSTIC
Gastrointestinal ulceration in competition horses is a major worldwide problem with up to 90% of performance horses affected during periods of training. Gastrointestinal ulcers cause loss of appetite which may lead to reduced performance, wasted training costs and loss of potential earnings. Vet Biotechnology is investigating a breath diagnostic test for the detection and management EGUS. The product requires further research, development and clinical testing.
