TENDON AND LIGAMENT INJURIES

Many performance horses, throughbreds, standardbreds and other breeds suffer tendon and ligament injuries as a result of the demands of competition. The most common injuries are bowed tendons and injuries to the suspensory ligament. In many instances these injuries are career ending. When other orthopaedic injuries are also considered, the greater majority of performance horses will sustain an injury at some stage of their careers that can be potentially treated with Stem cells.

Traditional therapies for repair of these injuries have low success rates. Those horses that do recover have a high risk of reinjury when they return to training because the injuries have been infilled with scar tissue. Stem Cell therapy offers to regenerate tendons and ligaments with elastic structures that are more likely to be functional in the longer term.

Vet Biotechnology’s treatment of the injured mature horses with bone-marrow derived Stem Cells is now trade-named ”Regenicell”.

Vet Biotechnology’s storage of umbilical-cord derived Stem Cells collected at birth is trade-named ”Stembank”.

(1) REGENICELL:

This service involves the treatment of tendon and ligament injury using stem cells extracted from the bone marrow of horses. Following injury a veterinarian trained by Vet Biotechnology can collect a bone marrow sample from the horse under standing sedation.

Stem cells are then isolated and multiplied to cell numbers in excess of 4 million in a state of the art laboratory. These cells are then simply implanted into the site of injury by the veterinarian to promote regeneration of the damaged tissue.

(2) STEM CELL STORAGE:

The umbilical cord is a rich source of stem cells. When collected at foaling stem cells can be isolated and multiplied by Vet Biotechnology’s laboratory and then cryogenically stored in case of future injury.
